Newry’s Proposed Vacation Rental Registration Ordinance

The Town of Newry has proposed a new Vacation Rental Registration Ordinance that would require annual registration for all vacation rental properties. This proposed ordinance is expected to pass at the upcoming Town Meeting.

Key Points of the Proposed Ordinance

• Mandatory registration for properties rented more than 14 days per year (with fees set by the Select Board).

• Safety standards: Working smoke/carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and septic system maintenance.

• Occupancy limits based on the property’s septic design and capacity (2 guests per legal bedroom plus 2 additional guests).

• Off-street parking required for all guests.

• Floor plan submission required showing the general layout, bedrooms, emergency exits, and safety equipment.

• Inspections may be conducted by the Code Enforcement Officer.

• Non-compliance penalties can include fines or registration suspension/revocation.
